Anzac Day review

Anzac Day review 28 April 2009 The ANZAC Day party at Bitterzoet last weekend got underway with the multi-talented Mike Berry (double international sportsman and all-round good guy), playing a fantastic 50 minute set of his own foot-stomping acoustic pop, plus some great Kiwi classics. The man who will always step up to the plate when required, Jeremy (JC) Cameron, then did a marvelous job singing the New Zealand National Anthem, as well as an equally impressive, yet improvised, version of Waltzing Matilda... a mean feat, with no Aussies game enough / drunk enough (at that stage) to sing their own National Anthem!! JC’s skills are sure to be made redundant unless he signs up with Holland's Got Talent ASAP!
MC of the night, Andy Sceats then recited an ANZAC Day reading, which was a somber reminder of the 25/04/15 significance.
Killing the silence, Amsterdam-based Aussies, Yakuza Smile then belted out their terrific 60 min set, blending in Aussie/Kiwi rock anthems with their own original rock’n’roll spectaculars. This went down a treat with the crowd who surprisingly still knew the words to Icehouse’s ‘Electric Blue’ after 20 years of pretending they didn’t.
To finish the formalities, Andy Sceats, with the assistance of the Special Guest and current World Number 1 Squash Player, Nicol David, drew out the "chook raffle", which was a very popular conclusion to the night.
With formalities drawing to a close, and only serious drinking and dancing left to be done, from out of nowhere came two Aussies, Cal Blackman and Simon Middleton, adamant that the Aussie National Anthem had to be sung, and done so by Aussies. This was done to considerable acclaim, rounding off the evening in a fantastically, spirited fashion.
Special thanks to Mike Berry, Yakuza Smile, Cal Blackman (the 2-Up organiser) and Nicol David for helping with the raffle.
